Meet Jasmine Diaz-Martinez, a Class of 2025 graduate and a first-generation commuter student now pursuing her Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT), specializing in Spanish for grades pre-K through 12. 

As an undergraduate student, Jasmine's favorite on-campus extracurricular was being a part of EvergreensAtLoyola, mentoring first-year students at Loyola. "The Evergreen program made me feel deeply connected to the campus community, like I was part of something greater than myself. It reaffirmed my passion for helping others, especially students. I learned how to be a better servant-leader and developed professional skills like conflict resolution, which have come in handy in a middle school classroom!"

A Latin American and Latino Studies minor, Jasmine worked with Dr. David Carey, professor of history, conducting archival research on rural indigenous communities in Guatemala. "I began my research during my junior year, writing a paper on the importance of holistic healthcare in addressing child malnutrition in the Guatemalan Highlands. As a Guatemalan, this research is personal to me, and I am so excited to be able to continue the work during my graduate studies. This experience has taught me the importance of stepping outside your comfort zone to be a changemaker."

"I have been deeply impacted by the social justice work that our community engages in. Loyola's ability to make everyone feel welcomed, accepted, and cared for, even as a commuter student, makes this place so special. I am a better daughter, sister, friend, student, and teacher because of the experiences that Loyola has given me."

Since graduating, Jasmine has returned to the middle school Spanish classroom, where she will continue to teach while pursuing her MAT through Loyola_Education.
