You said you wanted throwbacks, so we threw it WAY back to 1949. ⁣
⁣
This is vintage, archived footage from a boxing tournament held at East Bakersfield High School in 1949. ⁣
⁣
📰 The Bakersfield Californian published the following in the Sports section on January 20, 1949📰⁣
⁣
ELIMINATIONS ON MONDAY FOR EAST HIGH TOURNEY⁣
East Bakersfield High School will stage its third annual boxing tournament on Friday night, January 28, in the East High gym.⁣
Sponsored by the Letterman’s Club, the pugilistic tourney was presented before a capacity crowd of 1000 spectators last year.⁣
⁣
Coached by Les Carpenter, the Blades’ grid boss, the East High mitt-tossers will start elimination bouts on Monday and Wednesday afternoons of next week. At present, there are 65 youths entered in the tourney.⁣
⁣
14 Classifications⁣
The boxers will be divided into 14 classifications, ranging from 85 pounds to the unlimited class—185 pounds or over. Winners of the finals will receive miniature golden⁣ gloves, the runnerups will receive silver miniature gloves and the semi-finalists will receive medals.⁣
A total of 42 awards will be presented on the night of the finals.⁣
Returning for competition in this year’s tourney are Champions, Bill Gabbitas, who won the 85 pound class last year, and John Howard, who battled to a draw in the unlimited class in the 1948 tourney. Both are favored to successfully defend their crowns.⁣
⁣
Clean Injury Record⁣
In regard to the tourney, East Bakersfield High School officials are particularly proud of its boxing record, which has gone unblemished from injuries. The youths use 12 and 14-ounce glores and, aside from an occasional sprained thumb, there have been no injuries to speak of at East High during both the boxing class and tournament.⁣
⁣
Proceeds from this year’s boxing will go into a fund for the camera, which was recently purchased for the coaching staff. Additional film will also be bought from the show receipts.⁣
⁣
Tickets can be purchased at East Bakersfield High School and are priced at 74 cents for adults and 50 cents for students. The show will start at 8 p.m.
