With the strike from Philadelphia’s largest blue collar workers union underway, NBC10 captured a tense exchange between a Philadelphia Department of Sanitation manager and members of AFSCME District Council 33.

On Tuesday, July 1, 2025, DC 33 went on strike, impacting trash pickup and other services in Philly.

The union represents around 9,000 Philadelphia workers employed in city functions such as sanitation, the water department, police dispatch, street maintenance and the airport.

Ahead of the strike, Mayor Cherelle Parker warned that it would impact trash pickup services across Philadelphia. The city then released a list and map of collection centers for residents to bring their trash to amid the strike. The locations include the Sanitation Convenience Center on 2601 West Glenwood Avenue in Philadelphia’s Strawberry Mansion neighborhood.

Shortly before 9 a.m. on Tuesday, a Department of Sanitation manager opened the gates to the Strawberry Mansion center and advised sanitation “work study” members to begin removing the trash that had been dropped off. Video from NBC10 captured DC 33 members at the location closing the gate in order to stop the manager from entering and picking up the trash.

“We on strike,” one of the union members repeatedly says. “You know we on strike.”

The exchange ended with the union members forcing the gate shut despite the manager’s attempts to open it. After the incident, the striking workers moved in front of the gate and continued picketing. They also put their own locks on the gates at the sanitation center.
