#OnThisDay, in 1852, Frederick Douglass asked a question that still echoes across generations:

“What, to the American slave, is your 4th of July?”

A piercing critique. A call to conscience. A mirror held to a nation's ideals.
In this speech, Douglass did not celebrate, he exposed. While the country lit fireworks, he illuminated a truth: that liberty could not be celebrated equally in a land still shackled by slavery.

“This Fourth of July is yours, not mine. You may rejoice, I must mourn.”
