It’s been about 1 months since the amazing northern lights came over majority of North America and I wanted to share how I took these amazing shots! 

First was to use a tool called “PhotoPills”. This tool will help you understand when golden hour is, which way the moon will face, and which way so much other information is. 

Since I was shooting in the mountains and knew that the moon was going to be a very small crescent, I knew that I would be able to see much more of the night sky. The weather also called for clear skies with little to no haze which was perfect. 

My other step was to escape the city lights. There are countless options of getting completely dark skies like going out to Langley, Chilliwack, Squamish, or in the USA. I decided to go to Squamish since it was one of my favourite locations and I knew a couple great spots. 

My next step was to go early in the day to beat the rush of traffic and boy was I happy to have done that. Coming back throughout the night there was sooo much traffic, more than I’d ever seen in my life. 

Once I was able to find a location that I loved, and had set up my camera. Which was using the @sonyalpha A7IV along with the @sonyalpha 16-25 F2.8 G lens. I made a couple test shots to figure out shutter speed and iso. Since the northern lights were still fairly bright out I made about 5-10 test shots before I made any progress with the time lapse. 

I figured out that my settings to capture the dancing northern lights would be; Shutter speed 4 seconds. Aperture f2.8. ISO 1600. And the focal length was at 24mm. Yes I know I could have shot this at 16mm to capture much more of the sky but there were these annoying lights that I was seeing that were ruining my test shots so I decided to shoot a tighter shot.
