Russian former Transport Minister Roman Starovoit is presumed to have killed himself, Russia's investigative committee said on Monday.⁣

Starovoit had only just been sacked by Russian President Vladimir Putin in an unexpected move that comes at a time of challenges for the transport sector as the conflict with Ukraine drags on for a fourth year.⁣

The committee’s statement said Starovoit’s body was found “in his personal car with a gunshot wound,” adding that the “primary version under consideration is suicide.”⁣

Russia's aviation sector is short of spare parts and Russian Railways, the country's largest employer, is struggling with soaring interest costs and high rates.⁣

Putin's decree gave no reason for the dismissal of Starovoit who was appointed transport minister in May 2024 after nearly five years as governor of the Kursk region bordering Ukraine.⁣

Some political analysts raised the possibility his dismissal was connected with a corruption investigation in the region he once ran which centered on funds earmarked for fortifying Russia's border with Ukraine in the Kursk region.⁣

The Kremlin said Andrei Nikitin, a former governor of the Novgorod region, had been appointed acting transport minister.⁣
⁣
On Starovoit's exit and Nikitin's appointment, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: "In the president's opinion, Andrei Nikitin's professional qualities and experience will best contribute to ensuring that this agency, which the president described as extremely important, fulfils its tasks and functions."⁣
