🌊 July 15 is Arctic Sea Ice Day ❄️ A global reminder of the critical role sea ice plays in regulating our planet’s climate. Did you know the melting of Arctic sea ice impacts more species than just polar bears? Let's take a look at the impact of sea ice on species like the African penguin 🐧

The ocean is to our climate system what the heart is to the human body - it continuously pumps and redistributes essential heat and nutrients, helping maintain Earth’s temperature balance. It does so by absorbing vast amounts of solar heat and circulating it through dynamic currents, which moderate temperatures globally. However, as excess CO₂ warms the atmosphere, the ocean’s temperature rises, setting off a cascade of impacts. 

Rising ocean temperatures disrupt marine ecosystems by altering the behaviour and distribution of species. For instance, cold-water fish, the primary food source for the African penguin, are forced to migrate to cooler, deeper waters, making them less accessible near penguin breeding colonies. This shift means penguins must expend extra energy to forage, which often results in malnutrition and lower breeding success. 

Warmer oceans contribute to melting ice and rising sea levels. Low-lying coastal breeding sites used by African penguins become increasingly vulnerable to flooding and storm surges, further reducing their available habitat. In addition, the quest for new fishing zones and trade routes in a changing climate has led to increased shipping traffic, raising the risk of oil spills and pollution and endangering the penguins. 

By understanding how the ocean regulates our climate, through heat absorption, nutrient cycling, and water movement, we can better appreciate its role as the system’s heartbeat. Recognizing these intricate processes is vital for developing strategies to mitigate climate change and protect species like the African penguin.
