Nonconnah Boulevard – What’s the Story?

You’ve seen the sign. You’ve driven the road. But do you know where the name “Nonconnah” really comes from?

Unlike streets named after people or politicians, Nonconnah Blvd holds weight from way before Memphis was even Memphis.

“Nonconnah” is believed to come from a Choctaw or Chickasaw word, possibly meaning “long creek” or “crooked stream.”
This ain’t just a name — it’s a piece of Native history woven into our city’s streets.

Nonconnah Creek is one of Memphis’ major waterways. It starts in East Memphis, runs through South Memphis, and flows all the way into North Mississippi.
Back in the day, this creek was used by Indigenous tribes for settlement, farming, and travel — long before highways or neighborhoods came to be.

Today, Nonconnah Blvd (aka Nonconnah Pkwy) is part of State Route 385, a major loop connecting Germantown, Collierville, and South Memphis to I-240 and I-55.
Basically, it’s one of the outer roads that helps you bypass the city — but the history runs deep underneath it.

While we hear names like Elvis Presley Blvd, Crump, Union, and others that reflect Memphis’ modern story… Nonconnah is different.

It’s one of the few names that still carries a Native American origin, whispering stories from the land before the Bluff was even built.
