Bighorn 100 — My WHY

In my opinion, the WHY is everything for a 100. When the going gets tough, having my why is what keeps any doubt from seeping into my mind and makes the finish line all but a certainty.

Simply put, I did this one for me. Less simply put, I wanted to go deep, get fully present, and surrender to the headspace that I’ve only ever found mid-100. Within that, my intention was to be curious and hope I could learn about life and myself within that space. Most of all, I hoped to find a lesson of self-love. And so, to be open to said lesson, my why was to do this race and embrace all that came with it as an act of loving myself.

My prior why’s were out there with me at Bighorn too, and always will be when I run a 100 (or other goals):

• When I was in my darkest depressive episodes consumed by the spiral of unaliving myself, I used to tell myself: “If I can make it through this, I can do anything. I can climb any mountain, ski any line, and I can run 100 miles.” That third goal was the most tangible and became my lifeline. This is the theme of #FeelItAllFilm & powered my 1st and 2nd 100’s.

• For my 3rd and 4th 100’s, my primary why was to run for others. I ran for everyone who knows the depths of human existence, anyone who’s ever felt the emptiness of depression and the desperation of suicidality. I ran for those still with us, those who have left, and those who are left behind. I ran with all of their pain—and all of their strength, for they’re the strongest people I know.

As you can tell by those past why’s, my experiences have often been hyper-focused on helping others and giving of myself, my story, and my experience to the mission of mental health awareness and suicide prevention. I’m really proud of, grateful for that, and wouldn’t change any of it.

If you’ve come to one of my live events, then you’ve heard me say something to this account: All of this work, my story, the mission, has to start with us taking care of ourselves. In the macro sense of both this moment in my personal life and in the context of my life’s work, this go-around I needed to practice what I preach.

That means loving myself.
