It is absolutely astonishing to me that in 2025, I need to give this lesson on a racial slur that has been hurled at my face since I was a child. Make no mistake—this word was used in the most hateful way possible by those intending to cause harm. The idea that a user’s mere intention can somehow erase over a hundred years of xenophobia, generations of racism, the stories of millions of victims of hate crimes, and then repurpose that word into something innocuous or even “complimentary” is not just ignorant, it is dangerous. The Chinese Exclusion Act HAPPENED. Versions of that LAW continue to infect every single day of our lives. We have seen ample evidence of that. How do you think these laws come into being?

Look, I get how annoying it can feel to have your language policed out of existence. I also understand that not all racism is created equal—the stories underlying discrimination can vary in degrees. I will readily acknowledge that “ch*nk” is not nearly as egregious in my own mind as the n-word. But they’re all BAD! This is not a contest on who has it worse. It’s just statement that we can and MUST do better. And is it really that difficult to replace a word that has caused SO MUCH HARM with something else?
