REEL HISTORY: I’ve had hundreds of messages asking: Do people in Afghanistan speak Dari or Farsi?

So here’s my response.

This is one of the most sensitive and misunderstood topics among people from Afghanistan, especially in diaspora circles. But it’s also one of the most important.

In this reel, I explain how Persian—once simply known as Farsi in Afghanistan and Iran, came to be called Dari inside Afghanistan after 1964. I trace the origins of the term, the politics behind its use, and what it tells us about language, identity, and statecraft.

I know this may be contentious for some, but I believe it’s worth understanding how names change—and why.
