A pleasure to attend the womeninjournalism_uk Awards evening at the usa_in_uk, celebrating trailblazing women like bethrigbysky and cathynewmanc4.

A heartfelt congratulations to my personal inspiration christinalambauthor, whose fearless dedication to truth has shaped how the world understands Afghanistan since 1987. I still remember being 10 years old in 2003, reading and hearing about her reports on Afghanistan and the NATO’s intervention. Even as a child, I was struck by her courage and the way she raised the voices of those the world often ignored. Her work has inspired me ever since, and her well-deserved ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ honours a lifetime spent shining a light on stories that must be told.

These women are not just journalists—they are the architects of truth, defenders of democracy, and storytellers of our time.

And as I witnessed us celebrate these magnificent women, I was reminded of silenced female voices elsewhere. In Afghanistan, women in media have been wiped out. Of the 10,790 people working in the Afghan media before August 2021, 2,490 were women - actively shaping the country’s free media. Today, that number has dropped to almost zero.

Women journalists in the West now carry the torch—not just for themselves, but for the countless women who cannot report, write, or speak. Keep telling their stories. Keep the spotlight on. Their voices depend on us.
