The name “Badakhshan” derives from the Middle Persian word badaxš. The suffix -ān means the region belonged to someone with the title badaxš. Sassanid manuscripts found in Ka’ba-ye Zartosht referred to it as “Bałasakan.”

Badakhshan is a historical region spanning northeastern Afghanistan, eastern Tajikistan, and bordering districts of northern Pakistan and northwestern China. This mountainous region was historically significant due to its position as a key transit point for trade between China and western Eurasia, as well as for its gem mines.

Nasir Khusraw, one of the foremost poets of the Persian language, was born in 1004 in Khurasan. He rose to prominence in the courts of the Ghaznavids and the Saljuqs. Amidst this overwhelming pomp and luxury, he began to question his surroundings and search for a truth that would transcend life’s outward form. Returning home, Nasir Khusraw encountered severe persecution from anti-Ismaili religious scholars, compelling him to seek refuge in the remote Pamir Mountains of Badakhshan, where he composed most of his works. His Divan, a collection of around 11,000 verses, reflects philosophical, religious, and personal themes, mostly composed in the Valley of Yumgan, a remote mountainous region in Badakhshan.

Marco Polo wrote that Balas ruby could be found under the “Syghinan” (Shighnan) mountain in Badakhshan. “Balas” is derived from Balascia, the ancient name for Badakhshan. This region was significant for its gem mines, particularly the bright blue lapis lazuli of Afghanistan, which was transported by caravan routes to Egypt, China, Rome, and Byzantium. Some scholars claim that the “mountain valley” mentioned by the Greeks was Badakhshan.

The Great Game further shaped Badakhshan’s history, with the Anglo-Russian agreement of 1873 acknowledging “Badakhshan with its dependent district Wakhan” as fully belonging to the Amir of Kabul. The boundaries were defined along the Amu Darya and the Hindu Kush, cementing its strategic importance.
