The name “Faryab” is derived from Persian meaning “lands irrigated by the diversion of river water.” 

The ancient province of Faryab was named by the Sassanids, and is the birthplace of the renowned Islamic philosopher al-Farabi, as noted by the biographer Ibn al-Nadim. 

Al-Farabi, born in c.870 in Khorasan, modern-day Faryab province in Afghanistan, left an indelible mark on political philosophy, metaphysics, ethics, logic, and more, earning the title “Second Teacher” after Aristotle. He has also been renowned as the “Father of Islamic Neoplatonism” and the “Founder of Islamic Political Philosophy.”

Faryab is part of the trans-border region of Greater Khorasan, a historical and cultural melting pot bordering Turkmenistan. Its capital, Maimana, boasts ancient origins with a citadel dating back to the early Iron Age. Maimana and Andkhoy entered recorded history 2,500 years ago when Jews settled there in 586 BC, fleeing the destruction of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar. The area was under Persian control, later falling to Greek rule following Alexander the Great’s conquest in 326 BC, and then returning to Persian dominance from the 3rd to the 7th century AD.

What is now perceived as the pre-Islamic period ended with the conquest of northern Afghanistan by Arab Muslims (651-661 AD). This was period in which the area “turned into a vast battlefield as the Arab and Persian cultures battled for not only political and geographical supremacy but
ideological supremacy. It took a full century for Zoroastrianism, Buddhism, Nestorian Christianity and indigenous pagan cults to be finally swept away by the
Arab-Islamic armies. 

The history of Faryab took a dramatic turn in the 11th century with the Mongol invasion led by Genghis Khan. Cities and towns, including Maimana, were razed, populations massacred, and ancient irrigation systems destroyed. Despite this devastation, local tribal chiefs retained considerable autonomy, a legacy lasting until the 19th century.
