Today is the “National Ferdowsi Day” and also the “Persian Language Day” in the Persian calendar.

Ferdowsi (940-1019AD) the great Persian poet, is widely regarded as the preserver of the Persian language and its pre-Islamic cultural identity.

Ferdowsi was from the region of Greater Khorasan. During Ferdowsi’s time, Greater Khorasan was a significant cultural and political region encompassing much of what is now Afghanistan. 

An important part of the lands and cultural assets of the Greater Iran is located in Afghanistan, and in fact, it can be said that the historical and cultural identity of Iran will be seriously damaged and lacking without the region that is today Afghanistan.

Persian first gained prominence three thousand years ago, a language of literature, poetry & folklore that connected people across vast stretches of Asia, Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Just as French at one time served as the common language for educated elites across Europe, so Persian served as the preferred tongue for writers of literature and history from what is now Turkey to India.

Nothing in Western literature quite prepares us for the Shahnama. Ferdowsi’s “Shahnameh,” an epic 10th-century tale of kings, heroes and devils told in 50,000 rhyming couplets that took poet Ferdowsi 33 years to complete. It principally narrates the mythical and partly historical past of the Persian Empire from the creation of the world until the Muslim conquest in the seventh century.

“‘Shahnameh’ is our ‘Iliad’ and ‘Odyssey,’” but four times the size, and it’s one of my longstanding goals to be able to read the Shahnameh in Persian.

Afghanistan’s provinces of Balkh, Badakhshan, Bamyan, Taleqan, Kandahar, Nimruz, Zabul, Bast, Hirmand, Zarang, Panjshir and Ghazni  are mentioned in Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh. The people of Afghanistan consider the Shahnameh as their national identity card.

Shahnameh reading was long popular in Afghanistan. But was banned by Shah Habibullah Khan at the request of the British as it incited people’s spirit of valor and resistance.
