Every morning, these girls in eastern Afghanistan climb up a hill to get to their classroom. But as soon as they reach the age of 11, they are told by the Taliban to stay at home and not return. Their education ends there.

But despite that, the resilience of the girls and women of Afghanistan to keep going fills me with pride. They have been treated less than human for decades but they have stood for their ground defiantly.

Education is power. And those who fear it, burn in darkness.

As the world abandons these girls’ right to an education, I believe in their power. I believe in the power of my sisters. They will persevere. They will win.
