In the 21st century, it is unfathomable to believe that a nation can barred girls from going to school and university. Yet, this is precisely the reality in Afghanistan today under the Taliban regime.

This marks the second time the Taliban have imposed such draconian restrictions on education for girls, mirroring their earlier regime in the late 1990s, when they banned women and girls from any form of education for 6 years. Following their ousting in 2001, a renewed sense of possibility emerged. Governments, NGOs, and communities both within Afghanistan and internationally rallied together to champion the cause of girls’ education. Their collective efforts bore fruit, and by 2020, enrollment figures had soared to approximately 4 million from nearly zero in 2001.

Unfortunately, even if the Taliban permit girls to return to school, the educational landscape they re-enter would bear little resemblance to the one they were forced to leave. It is expected to be a system redesigned to propagate ideological extremism, lacking in inclusivity and a modern education.

The trajectory is alarmingly clear. Denying education to a generation of women will not only leave them vulnerable to marginalisation, abuse, and violence but will also severely handicap the potential of half the nation’s population. This not only stifles social and economic progress but entrenches Afghanistan deeper into poverty and sustains its isolation on the global stage. The prohibition against girls attending school is a crisis that transcends Afghanistan’s borders, posing a stark threat to regional stability and global peace. 

We CAN’T stay quiet. We need to continue raising awareness in order to ensure we recovered these regressive policies.
