How to make Kombucha (part 1): SCOBY 🦠🧫🍺

Kombucha is SO GOOD, but so expensive! And homemade just tastes better. It’s a really fun process so follow along as I will teach you how to make your own! The first and most important step is the SCOBY.

How does it work? A SCOBY is a living culture (looks like a soggy pancake disc) of bacteria and yeast that ferments sweet tea by converting sugars into organic acids, carbon dioxide, and a tiny amount of ethanol — which is why kombucha is fizzy and so tangy! It contains probiotics and aids in digestion, gut health, and balance your microbiome.

🫖Here’s what you’ll need to make your own:
-large clean jar
-cheesecloth
-rubber bands
-1 bottle classic unflavored kombucha
-6 bags black tea or 1 1/2 tbsp loose leaf
-8 cups of water

Boil 2 cups of water and stir in sugar until dissolved. Add tea bags and steep for 10-15 minutes. Remove and discard tea bags and pour the liquid into the jar followed by 6 cups cold water. Let the liquid cool down to room temperature (very important!) then add your kombucha, make sure to get all the sediment and strands at the bottom of the bottle. Cover the jar with a cheesecloth or paper towels secured by a rubber band. Place it in a dark spot away from any sunlight and wait :) in 4 weeks you’ll have a new SCOBY ready to brew kombucha!!

See you in 4 weeks!!! When we’ll start the first fermentation to brew our first batch of Kombucha so follow along 🤍
