The Thoroughbred Daily News is sad to share that New Years Eve (Night Conqueror), reported to be the oldest living Thoroughbred in America, has passed away at the age of 39. His long-time owner Julie Izzo, who owned the gelding nicknamed ‘Axl’ for more than 32 years, shared with TDN that his life came to a peaceful end on May 13, 2025.

In her statement, she wrote: “I had always promised him that I would not compromise his comfort for more time. And although he was ready, I was not. But I never would be.

“I will forever be grateful for our many years together. There will always be a piece of me missing. He wasn’t an extraordinary racehorse. But he was extraordinary to me.”

Axl is believed to be the second-oldest American Thoroughbred on record, passing away at the age of 39 years and 57 days. History’s oldest-known American Thoroughbred, a gelding named Dead Solid Perfect, died in 2022 at 39 years and 188 days.

Born the same year as legends Sunday Silence and Easy Goer, Axl only raced 18 times before retiring and eventually making his way to Julie, where he found his place beside her as they traversed life’s many ups and downs together.

Though his age was remarkable, it was the gelding’s relationship with his owner Julie and the care that she provided him with throughout his lifetime that’s the truly notable aspect of his story.
