wanted to share something personal with you all for this illustration. I’ve been going through mental health problems for awhile. they mainly started when I started middle school, and it wasn’t until after I got into mental health advocacy that I realized some of things I was feeling and thinking weren’t things every feels and thinks.

about two years ago I told my mom I wanted to go to therapy and it never happened. last year after coming back from study abroad I said it too. still didn’t happen. I now more than ever want to go to therapy. I shouldn’t make myself go through my problems alone — I deserve help.

I always am downplaying my own struggles and problems because I know that other people out there have it worse. But that’s okay if I’m not in the most severe state possible – I still deserve to see a mental health professional.

So here’s a public note to myself:

Dear me,
Please make that therapy appointment. YOU ARE WORTHY OF GETTING HELP! Love, yourself.

I want to be as open as I can be about starting therapy, and will be documenting the journey in my stories (and possibly feed). A lot of people, especially young adults, don’t know how to make a therapy appointment at all. I want to help others feeling the same as me know how to exactly reach out for help. People always say “don’t be afraid to ask for help,” but no one really knows what to even do to ask for that help.

A part of destigmatizing mental health and making it easier to get help is by giving information on how to go to therapy in the first place. To everyone out there who doesn’t think they’re worthy of getting professional help, just know that you are and always will be.
