🚀 FROM MEMPHIS TO NASA‼️

Meet Dwight DeBerry — a Memphis native making major moves in science, innovation, and impact. His journey from the Bluff City to a NASA internship is proof that passion + perseverance = purpose 

Currently a senior at Tennessee State University (TSU), Dwight is earning dual degrees in Architectural Engineering AND Psychology (yes, both). But what got him to NASA? YEARS of quiet grind and groundbreaking research.

His work started with engineering projects under TSU professors like Dr. Parthasarathy and Dr. Chimba — focused on tensegrity structures and cable barriers for the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

“I didn’t realize at the time how valuable those moments were,” Dwight says. “But that research is what opened the door to NASA.”

Now, he’s a Research Lab Assistant Intern working with the Intelligent Tactical Mobility Robotics Lab at TSU, on a NASA-sponsored project that could literally shape the future of flight — developing emergency landing site systems for Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) aircraft.

Using advanced optical imaging, data analytics, and tools like Google Earth, Dwight is helping to make urban air travel safer — especially for underserved communities.

And guess what? He’s doing all this as the ONLY UNDERGRADUATE on a team full of grad-level engineers. Let that sink in.

Beyond the lab, he’s also the founder of Extreme Dorm Makeover, a business dedicated to transforming dorms into safe, functional spaces for students — proving he’s just as committed to everyday impact as he is to innovation.

After graduation, Dwight plans to pursue his Ph.D., blend research and mentorship, and become a professor who uplifts the next generation of Black engineers.
