Kappa Alpha Psi’s Marc Lamont Hill Speaks Out After On-Stage Attack

On MLK Day 2024, Dr. Marc Lamont Hill, author, activist, and proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., was pepper sprayed during a live event in Philly—just steps from his bookstore, Uncle Bobbie’s.

The attacker, a woman suffering from severe mental health issues, had stalked and vandalized Hill’s store weeks prior. During a Q&A, she approached the mic, made erratic claims about conspiracies involving the CIA and the President, then unexpectedly sprayed Hill in the face.

Hill later shared the moment on The Joe Budden Podcast, saying, “I thought she had a gun. I didn’t know her. Never met her.” He added, “You can hear me say on the video, ‘Don’t call the police.’ I walk it like I talk it.”

Instead of pressing charges, Hill helped the woman get support, working with her family and mental health professionals to begin a restorative process. “She had real trauma. Real illness. I wanted her to get help—not jail time.”

While the Internet had jokes, Hill’s response showed leadership, empathy, and conviction. He modeled what it means to seek justice without punishment.

But this incident also raises serious questions for us as a community:

How do we better protect Black men and women in public spaces? How are we addressing mental health in the Black community—with real support and not just hashtags? And how can we create safe spaces where justice and care walk hand in hand?
