Former President Joe Biden has defended his use of an autopen to sign clemency decisions during his final weeks in office, a move that has drawn criticism from Republicans questioning his involvement in the process. Biden told The New York Times that while he did not review each case individually, he approved the overall standards for clemency and authorized the use of an autopen due to the high volume of cases.

"We're talking about a whole lot of people," Biden said, explaining the decision to use the autopen. During his last weeks in office, Biden reduced sentences for nearly 4,000 federal inmates, including nonviolent drug offenders, those on death row, and individuals on home confinement since the pandemic. He also pardoned high-profile figures such as Dr. Anthony Fauci, Gen. Mark Milley, members of his own family, and January 6 investigators.

President Donald Trump criticized Biden's use of the autopen, calling it "one of the biggest scandals that we've had in 50 to 100 years." Trump claimed Biden was not fully aware of what he was signing, a charge Biden dismissed as "lies."
