On this day in 1982, Mary Slaney shattered the 10,000m world record at an Oregon Track Club all-comer’s meet at Hayward Field 🌎

Running solo from the gun, she clocked 31:35.3, taking 42 seconds off the previous world record — just weeks after setting a 5,000m world record on the same track 

This performance made it official: Mary was the fastest American woman of 1982 at every distance from 800m to 10,000m
