We asked our team for their favourite ways to save money on flights.

🗓️ Be Flexible with Dates

Shifting your trip by even a day or two can make a big difference in price, so flexibility is your friend. This is especially true if you’re travelling during school holidays or busier travel seasons. You can use Skyscanner’s flight search and select “Whole Month” to see the cheapest days to fly in your chosen month.

🎒 Hand Luggage

Travelling with hand luggage only helps you avoid checked baggage fees, which can add up quickly - especially on budget airlines. Just make sure your bag meets the airline’s size requirements to avoid extra charges at the airport.

✈️ Consider Single Tickets

Buying return flights together isn’t always the cheapest option. Sometimes booking two single tickets - specially with different airlines - can save you money. For example, you might fly out with Ryanair and return with easyJet, or mix and match between airlines and airports (e.g. flying out from Gatwick and back to Luton).

🛫 Be Flexible with Airports.

Different airports have different overheads, and you can save a packet by comparing flight prices. You can find out which airport is cheapest for your flight with this one simple trick – tick the ‘add nearby airports’ option when you search on Skyscanner. This works for your arrival airport, too, but be careful – if you’re not sure where the airports are and how to get to and from them, do some research before booking. You can end up paying more for travel to and from the airport.

🚨 Use Price Alerts

Our Price Alerts feature let you track flight prices so you can book when they’re at their lowest. Download the app, set a price alert for any route you’re watching and you’ll get a notification when the price changes. This means you can jump on the deal at just the right time.
