"With each step, the ravine became colder and darker. Above me, the crest of the mountain gleamed in the sunlight. It seemed very far away. The stream bed was a jumble of boulders that tortured the water into a roaring cataract. After finding a place where I had fairly good footing, I shouted for Claude to let the goat slide on down. Moments later, there was a crashing from above, a shower of loose dirt and rocks around me, and the goat splashed down. The rock walls on both sides were straight up and down and were covered with ice. There was no way out but down, and that meant a long drop. The chances of surviving without serious injury, I calculated, were perhaps three in 10. Not very good odds. If both of us were injured or knocked unconscious, our chances of survival were next to nothing. Who would look for us in that dark ravine?” — Jim Carmichel⁠
