A Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) is a secure, low-risk way to grow your savings. Your initial investment is guaranteed, and you can expect a return at a specific interest rate over a set period of time called a term. 
 
GIC terms can range from 30 days to 10 years in which you don’t remove the funds, but there are also cashable and redeemable GICs that allow you to take money out before the end of your term. 

There are several types of GICs in addition to cashable and redeemable, with different interest rates. These include non-redeemable, and market-linked GICs. The money in a GIC is also eligible to be insured by CDIC (Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation).
