A special artist can define a genre. To invent one, however - as Ozzy Osbourne did with metal music - is innovation of the highest order. With his band Black Sabbath and ensuing solo career, the pioneering English singer, who passed away today at the age of 76, carved for the masses a sound (and culture) that passionately celebrated the darkest and shadowiest corners of human experience.

Born to a blue-collar English family, John Michael Osbourne lived a frenetic youth dotted with criminal stints before linking up with future Sabbath bandmates Bill Ward, Tony Iommi, and Geezer Butler. Public interest in horror films sparked an idea: that the crew could successfully shirk their original British bluesy sound in favor of an identity that leaned into themes of occultism, violence, and death. They grabbed the name Black Sabbath from a Boris Karloff horror anthology and soon began to book shows, anchored by their uninhibited frontman now known as Ozzy Osbourne. Soon he would become known by another name: the Prince of Darkness.

The band’s ‘Black Sabbath’ debut in 1970 was quickly followed up by ‘Paranoid,’ considered the keystone tome of metal music due to its innovative use of distortion-drenched guitar riffs, Ozzy’s anguished vocals, and battering drums. Album opener “War Pigs” overwhelms with a wall of fuzz, only to be followed by the incessant chug of “Paranoid” and the laconic chaos of “Iron Man.” As the band’s popularity rose, so too did Ozzy’s recklessness, culminating in his firing at the end of the decade. Never down for long, he soon re-emerged with a solo album, ‘Blizzard of Ozz,’ which featured “Crazy Train.” It would go on to sell 5 million records.

Later in life, Ozzy would become known to new generations as a kooky but lovable reality star - or, as he observed himself, “the guy who bit the head off the bat.” Either way, all roads lead back to Ozzy’s visceral body of work, a lasting testament to the fact that both rock music and life, he once quipped, “is not meant to be perfect.”
