On Wednesday, March 19, the UC San Diego women’s basketball team (20-16, 13-7 Big West) played the first March Madness game in school history. Sophomore guard Sumayah Sugapong contributed 19 points to a furious second-half comeback effort, while graduate student guard Parker Montgomery scored 15 points in the final game of her five-year UCSD career. However, the Tritons were unable to close the gap in the final minutes, losing to the Southern University Jaguars 68-56.

While the 2024-25 season ended in disappointment for the Tritons, their year was nothing short of extraordinary. In its first year of postseason eligibility, UCSD earned a No. 4 seed in the Big West Championship — its best-ever finish in the conference standings — then upset No. 1 Hawai’i and No. 3 UC Davis en route to a Big West title. Led by Sugapong, redshirt sophomore guard Gracie Gallegos, and junior guard Sabrina Ma, the Tritons will look to return to the Big Dance next season.
