🦎 The Thorny Devil's body is a fortress of intimidating spikes, its first and most obvious defense against predators. To further evade danger, it relies on camouflage and a unique, halting gait—freezing and rocking as it moves slowly—making it difficult for predators to track as it searches for food and water.

Its most incredible adaptation, however, is how it drinks. The lizard's scales are intricately ridged to be hydrophilic, or water-attracting. When it makes contact with any moisture, from morning dew to damp sand, a network of channels between the scales immediately goes to work. Using capillary action, this system automatically transports every collected drop of water from anywhere on its body directly to the corners of its mouth to be swallowed.
