Jaime and Fortino Bañuelos are a father and son duo creating some of the most intriguing and esoteric agave spirits in Mexico, traditionally crafted on their family lands in the rugged region of Southern Zacatecas. With their Tepemete, a small, low-yielding agave long considered too difficult to work with, they have revived it from obscurity and given the world a singularly delicious mezcal. Similarly, Bañuelos is the first family in Zacatecas to produce a distillate from the Masparillo, a wild grown agave that takes over a decade to mature along the region’s mountainsides. Bound on three sides by the famed tequila producing state of Jalisco, Zacatecas also grows fantastic Tequilana plants, but cooked underground and wild fermented in wooden barrels, this is a precious example of what old world tequila has tasted liked for centuries.
