Good to join trtworld today with thatendabrady, Lee Jasper, Halima Khan and afzalkhanmcr to discuss ethnic minority political representation in the UK after Vaughan Gething became the first Black person to lead a national government in Europe - elected as the first minister of Wales.

The UK has a highly diverse population due to historical immigration, especially following World War II, from the Commonwealth countries and beyond. We now have 5 leaders across United Kingdom who are of ethnic minority background - Hamza Yousef (First Minister of Scotland), Rishi Sunak (Prime Minister of the UK, Sadie Khan (Mayor of London) and Leo Varadkar (Prime Minister of Ireland (now resigned)). Something we would not see in France, Germany or many other European countries.

Our diversity has gradually been reflected in political representation as communities establish deeper roots and become more politically active.

Having said this, political discourse in the UK has at times been infused with racially charged rhetoric, especially on issues such as immigration, national identity, and law and order. Such rhetoric has perpetuated stereotypes and foster a divisive political environment. We need more people from ethnic minority backgrounds in leadership roles, not for symbolic reasons but as a result of Britain’s meritocratic principles to ensure we have people in power with the potential to serve the British public properly.

And to prioritise and frame policies that are critical to these communities. Issues such as economic inequality, healthcare disparities, and differential treatment by law enforcement continue to disproportionately affect minority communities.
