Filming took place in California and Hawaii, utilizing advanced CGI and animatronics that pushed the limits of 1990s technology. The film adopted a darker tone than its predecessor, emphasizing action over science. Despite a mixed critical reception, The Lost World was highly anticipated and supported by a massive $ 250 million marketing campaign, including toys, video games, and merchandise. It earned 618.6 million dollars globally, becoming the second-highest-grossing film of 1997. Spielberg later expressed disappointment with the movie, but it paved the way for Jurassic Park III in 2001 and the later Jurassic World trilogy, with Goldblum reprising his role in Fallen Kingdom (2018) and Dominion (2022).
