E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, commonly known as E.T., is a 1982 American science fiction film directed and produced by Steven Spielberg, with a screenplay by Melissa Mathison. The story follows a young boy named Elliott who forms a deep bond with a stranded alien he names E.T. With the help of his family and friends, Elliott sets out to help E.T. return to his home planet. The film stars Dee Wallace, Henry Thomas, Peter Coyote, Robert MacNaughton, and Drew Barrymore.

The idea for the film originated from an imaginary friend Spielberg created during his parents’ divorce. In 1980, he collaborated with Mathison to develop a new story inspired by his shelved project Night Skies. Mathison completed the first draft, titled E.T. and Me, in under two months, followed by two revisions. Columbia Pictures passed on the project, doubting its commercial viability, but Universal Pictures acquired the rights for $1 million.

Filming ran from September to December 1981 on a $10.5 million budget. Unusually, the movie was shot in rough chronological order to help the young actors deliver more authentic emotional performances. The film's animatronic E.T. was designed by Carlo Rambaldi.

E.T. premiered as the closing film at the Cannes Film Festival on May 26, 1982, and opened in U.S. theaters on June 11. It became a massive box office success, surpassing Star Wars (1977) as the highest-grossing film of all time, a title it held until Jurassic Park (1993), also directed by Spielberg. Universally acclaimed by critics, E.T. is widely considered one of the most influential and beloved films ever made.

At the 55th Academy Awards, the film received nine nominations and won four: Best Original Score, Best Visual Effects, Best Sound, and Best Sound Editing. It also earned Best Picture and Best Director nominations, and went on to win five Saturn Awards and two Golden Globes. E.T. was re-released in 1985 and again in 2002 for its 20th anniversary with updated visual effects and new scenes. To mark its 40th anniversary, it returned to theaters in IMAX on August 12, 2022. In 1994, the Library of Congress selected E.T. for preservation in the United States National Film Registry, recognizing it as culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.

A group of small aliens visits a California forest at night to collect plant samples. One becomes separated and is left behind when government agents arrive. The alien finds shelter in the shed of 10-year-old Elliott Taylor, who eventually befriends him and names him E.T. Elliott, along with his siblings Michael and Gertie, keeps E.T. hidden from their mother and helps him build a device to contact his people.

As E.T. and Elliott form a deep emotional bond, they begin to share thoughts and feelings. On Halloween, the kids sneak E.T. into the forest to transmit a message home. The next day, E.T. is found sick and taken back to the house, where government agents soon arrive and quarantine the area. E.T. dies briefly, but is revived when his species returns to Earth.

Elliott and Michael help E.T. escape, leading to a dramatic bike chase. E.T. levitates the boys to safety before reuniting with his ship. In a heartfelt goodbye, E.T. tells Elliott, “I’ll be right here,” before departing as his ship leaves a rainbow in the sky.
