Journalism’s victory in the GI NYRA Bets Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park was not only thrilling, but also quite emotional, as it was his first since the all-too-soon passing of his dam, Mopotism, who died from complications of colic earlier in the week at Don Alberto USA. The Uncle Mo mare was 11.

A hard-knocking racehorse in her own right, with earnings near $900,000 and highlights including a victory in the GII La Canada and hitting the board in four Grade I races, Mopotism produced Journalism, her first foal, in 2022. She also leaves behind a 2-year-old Tapit colt, named Nitro Tap and owned by Flying Dutchmen; a yearling Into Mischief filly and a young filly by Flightline.

In a statement released with the news of her passing, Don Alberto wrote: “She was a gift to all those that got to know her beautiful eye, strong mind, and gentle way. We are grateful to everyone that has taken care of her over the years and poured so much love into her each day. We are humbled to watch the brilliance of her son, Journalism, and to know that her legacy will continue through him and her other foals. On to greener pastures, Mopo. You will be dearly missed.”

Don Alberto, who bred Journalism, co-owns the multiple GI-winning colt with Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Bridlewood Farm, Robert V. LaPenta, Elayne Stables Five, and Coolmore partners.
