Ireland’s only protected insect, the beautiful Marsh Fritillary butterfly, stars in a new comic that has been created as part of the "Beo and Raja" series to spotlight the importance of #biodiversity and the #bioeconomy.

The newly launched comic, The Butterfly Effect, focuses on the importance of #insects with the aim of engaging younger audiences.

Prof. Jane Stout, Vice President for Biodiversity and Climate at Trinity, and President of the Royal Entomological Society for Insect Science, was one of the contributors in a team comprising researchers and collaborators from University College Dublin, Maynooth University, Trinity, BioBeo EU and the BiOrbic Research Ireland Centre for Bioeconomy, and illustrator Nathan Wright.

Prof. Stout said: “Insects are the most diverse group of animals on the planet, and yet their importance in ecosystems is vastly under-appreciated.

They use various methods of communication, from visual and chemical, to tactile and audio and while we can’t always see or hear them, they are important to healthy ecosystems that underpin the bioeconomy, which uses nature’s cycle - not fossil fuels - to create food, materials and energy. Only a handful of species are problematic to people, and many play crucial, beneficial roles; plenty of us have an inkling as to their importance as pollinators, but they are also key pest controllers and nutrient cyclers, and provide food for wild birds and other animals.

This comic has been developed to communicate to and engage with a younger audience about the diversity of insects, their connection to Irish culture, and their importance in our bioeconomy, including our food production systems.”
