Happy #HistoryMonday!🕰️ Today we’re looking back at the incredible run of the iconic musical “Godspell”, which played on the Studebaker stage from July 1972 to September 1973.

Directed by Nina Faso (slide two) and featuring an almost entirely Chicago-born cast, #Godspell wowed local critics with its brave, joyful, and vibrant interpretation of the Gospel according to St. Matthew. 

However, not everyone was pleased with the production. A 1972 Chicago Tribune review written by Mary Daniels received criticism from readers over its “blasphemous” description of the musical, particularly in the chosen title: “God has a belly laugh”. 

The Tribune responded by quoting Daniels’ words: “Nuns and priests cheer at the end…atheists come to ‘Godspell’ too. It’s not the kind of show that preaches to you.”

Another glowing Tribune review ended on a lovelier note: “The basic feeling is that the best policy is to live, to enjoy, to appreciate. And that makes for a wonderfully happy show at the Studebaker.”
