Continuing the tradition of citizen science in the polar region, FjordPhyto teaches tourists how to take samples of phytoplankton, a small but mighty star of the Antarctic ecosystem that tells us tons about the marine ecosystem and climate change. 

It's a winning idea: While part of UC San Diego's StartBlue Ocean Enterprise Accelerator, co-founder Allison Cusick received UC San Diego’s Student/Alumni Innovator of the Year award for her work to evolve citizen science and even established a multi-year collaboration with Viking Cruises.
