July 29 is International Tiger Day! 🐯

🐾 Meet the Sumatran Tiger: Native to the dense tropical forests of Sumatra, Indonesia, Sumatran tigers are the smallest of all tiger subspecies — but don’t let their size fool you. These rare cats are fast, powerful, and perfectly adapted to their rainforest home with darker coats, thick black stripes, and webbed feet that make them excellent swimmers.

With only several hundred individuals left in the wild, Sumatran tigers are listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Their population continues to decline due to habitat loss from palm oil plantations, human-wildlife conflict, poaching, and the loss of natural prey. Every tiger counts — and conservation efforts have never been more urgent.

Here at your Toronto Zoo, we’re proud to care for Kemala and Hari, two beautiful and independent Sumatran tigers. Kemala has a fiery personality and is known for being highly observant and aware of her surroundings. Hari is known for his laid-back demeanour, his sensitivity to unfavourable weather, and his love for enrichment.

As part of our commitment to protecting Sumatran tigers in the wild, members of your Toronto Zoo’s team have traveled to Sumatra to support the Sumatran Ranger Project, an initiative that works directly with communities living near tiger habitats. Thanks to your support, we’ve helped fund four protective livestock corrals, which have successfully reduced conflict between local farmers and wild tigers. By preventing tigers from preying on livestock, these corrals help reduce retaliatory killings — giving tigers like Kemala’s wild cousins a better chance at survival.

Your Toronto Zoo has been dedicated to educating the public and supporting Sumatran tiger conservation since 1994, and we remain committed to protecting this iconic species through local and global action.

On your next visit, be sure to stop by and say hello to Kemala and Hari. 🐅
