Indie game publishing platform itch.io has updated its content guidelines to allow developers to publish adult games again, provided they adhere to certain rules.

Last week, itch.io de-indexed all adult content from its search and browse pages, following an anti-adult content campaign from Australian advocacy group Collective Shout. In a letter to PayPal, Mastercard, Visa, and others, the group accused the companies of "facilitating and profiting from" sales of games containing non-consensual explicit acts and explicit acts involving children on Steam and itch.io.

Steam and itch.io then removed their NSFW content, which didn't sit well with game developers.

"We understand this action is sudden and disruptive, and we are truly sorry for the frustration and confusion caused by this change," itch.io said in its response. "To ensure that we can continue to operate and provide a marketplace for all developers, we must prioritize our relationship with our payment partners and take immediate steps towards compliance."

Now, as Game Developer reports, itch.io has updated its terms, which list a number of no-go zones for developers, which you can find a full list of on their site.

Games containing these topics will no longer get paid through the platform, itch.io says. Additionally, if a developer has earned money despite violating the rules, the platform may recall funds and block any pending transactions.
