Jeff Daniels points to how much our political culture has shifted. He remembers a time when politics wasn’t part of every conversation—when it didn’t follow us around on screens and in our pockets. Now it’s constant. That kind of visibility can bring awareness, but it can also deepen division.

He’s not saying we all need to agree. But if we can’t even stay in the room with people who see things differently, what are we actually building?

Somewhere along the line, we started treating respect as optional. Civility became political. And disagreement began to feel like a threat.

But democracy only survives if we choose something better.
