Yesterday, Indonesian fishers who sued US canned tuna giant Bumble Bee responded to the company’s motion to dismiss their suit. Their suit alleges years of forced labour while catching fish sold by the brand. ⁣
⁣
"Bumble Bee cannot deny the fact that Indonesian migrant fishermen's catch contributes to the global supply chain. Instead of taking responsibility, they choose to hide behind legal technicalities. We fully support these four fishermen's legal fight. This is not just about compensation, but about recognizing that forced labour in the fishing industry is real and systemic," said Hariyanto Suwarno, Chairman of the Union of Indonesian Migrant Workers (SBMI). ⁣
⁣
This came just one day after World Day Against Trafficking in Persons (30 July), for which the UN has highlighted the role of legal systems in combating the issue.⁣
