Yesterday at the trinitylongroomhub O’Connell 250 Symposium, Taoiseach Micheál Martin launched two new stamps to mark 250 years since the birth of Daniel O’Connell, campaigner for Catholic emancipation. 

The stamps commemorate Daniel O’Connell’s enduring legacy through stylised depictions of momentous scenes from his political career; in one, O’Connell is shown speaking at one of his famous monster meetings, while in the second he is depicted following his release from Richmond Bridewell, the prison where he was held for three months in 1843 after his proposed monster meeting in favour of the Repeal of the Union, or Irish self-government, was declared illegal. 

Speaking at the O’Connell 250 Symposium, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said: ‘By every measure, Daniel O’Connell was the most internationally known and influential leader in our history. In the words of Gladstone, he was the greatest popular leader the world has ever known. He was a campaigner for the Catholic emancipation, the repeal of the Act of the Union and the abolition of slavery. He proved to be a powerful constitutional and legal reformer. I am delighted to unveil these stamps marking 250 years since his birth, to honour him and remember his legacy.’ 

Provost Dr Linda Doyle said: ‘This symposium is a significant moment in the State’s commemorations of the anniversary of the birth of Daniel O’Connell. By bringing together academics, lawyers, human rights activists, and political leaders, this gathering demonstrates the critical role research and scholarship play in helping us to understand how the great challenges of the past provide lessons which can be applied to building a fairer world today. I am proud that Trinity is the place where much of this research and scholarship is happening, and I am delighted that this symposium is focusing, in particular, on the defence of democracy and the fight against injustice in our own time.’ 

The stamps were designed by Irish artist David Rooney.
