The United States has rejected Tehran’s demand for financial compensation over June’s airstrikes on its nuclear facilities, calling the request “ridiculous” and urging Iran to stop funding militant groups and pursuing nuclear escalation.⁣
⁣
The remarks, delivered by U.S. Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott at a Thursday briefing, follow a high-profile interview in which Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told the Financial Times that talks with the U.S. would not resume without compensation and guarantees against future strikes.⁣
⁣
The U.S. and Israel carried out coordinated strikes on Iranian sites at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan days before the June ceasefire, citing an imminent nuclear threat. It marked a dramatic escalation in the long-running standoff over Iran’s nuclear program. Tehran subsequently halted cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, although technical discussions are expected to resume in the coming weeks.⁣
⁣
According to the FT, Araghchi and U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff exchanged messages throughout the conflict. While Witkoff reportedly sought to restart nuclear negotiations, Araghchi insisted that any new talks require “real confidence-building measures,” including financial redress and security guarantees.⁣
⁣
Pigott pushed back strongly on Thursday. “If the Iranian regime really wanted to save money, they would stop funding terrorist death squads, stop oppressing their own people, and stop wasting money on a nuclear program that isolates them further,” he said.⁣
⁣
He reiterated that Washington remains open to diplomacy but warned time is running out: “The ball is in Iran’s court.”⁣
⁣
Tehran, meanwhile, has publicly confirmed for the first time that a third enrichment facility near Isfahan was hit in the strikes. Araghchi also warned that any European move to restore UN sanctions under the 2015 nuclear deal would end talks with the UK, France, and Germany: “They cannot lift sanctions, they cannot do anything.”⁣
