THE SQUAT MISTAKE WE’RE ALL MAKING

We pretty much all acknowledge that our bar path should remain over our mid-foot on the squat.

But we all then sit back and say “Good job” as the majority of people have a bar path which ends up over their toes and leads to the hips rising faster than the shoulders out of the bottom position.

This is almost always a mix of 2 things:

Ankle mobility - stopping the knees from travelling far enough forward, leading to excessive hip flexion

Weak Quads (relatively) - because we’re never loading them as we should due to the above

Go watch some Olympic Weightlifters squat from the side and watch their bar path. They CAN NOT get away with this same pattern, as it would completely ruin their ability to catch the bar.

Now, I’m NOT saying you should squat like a weightlifter (whatever that means) but we SHOULD be aiming to maintain that mid-foot bar position regardless of our stance width, bar position or even training goal

Start filming your squats from the side. Work on your ankle mobility. And stop trying to squat without using your quads... trust me I did it for years, it’s not a good strategy 😅

Here’s to stronger squats 💪 with Tom Sheppard.
