If your idea of Portuguese wine is Casal Garcia or Silk & Spice… it’s time for a recalibration. Here are two bottles that showcase the soul of Portuguese winemaking 🍷 1996 Chitas Colares Reserva Tinto – Ramisco, Colares DOC Colares is literally unlike anywhere else in Europe. Here, ungrafted Ramisco vines cling to deep, sandy soils just steps from the Atlantic ( you can hear waves crash from the vineyards), untouched by phylloxera thanks to the very sand that makes them nearly impossible to farm. This 1996 release offers a masterclass in time and terroir. Bracing acidity, notes of sour cherry, pomegranate, dried rose, and that unmistakable saline edge. Think sea spray and old wood. It’s very structured, savory, and strikingly alive..... THE WINE IS 29 YEARS OLD. Traditionally Colares wines are aged for years in wooden barrels and then in bottles before release (often 10+ years!) Wines like this are slowly going away. 🍷 2022 Filipa Pato ‘Nossa Calcário’ – Baga, Bairrada DOC Once dismissed for its fierce tannins and high acidity, Baga has found its modern champion in Filipa Pato, who along with her father Luis Pato, is redefining what this grape can be and should be. Luis Pato is legendary in this region as he has and still is playing a pivotal role with his daughter now making world class Baga and rescuing its reputation. Grown on chalky limestone, fermented naturally, and handled with minimal intervention, it delivers cranberry, black cherry, tobacco leaf, and forest floor. With a structure that speaks of Burgundy but a soul that is purely Bairrada. If I had to give examples using other areas and grapes i'd say this is Burgundy meets Barolo type of wine.
