This week we celebrated the birthday of Hyman G. Rickover, also known as the “Father of the Nuclear Navy.” His impressive career began in 1918 and spanned for 63 years, making him the longest serving member of the armed forces in history. 

In 1945, Rickover was assigned to work with General Electric on developing a nuclear propulsion plant for destroyers. Quickly, he was one of the first people to realize the potential nuclear power had for the Navy, and he was eventually appointed as head of development of the nation’s nuclear submarine program.

Happy birthday, Admiral Rickover!
