Five years ago, Thai human rights defender Pimsiri “Mook” Petchnamrob made a speech in support of democratic reform. Tomorrow, her trial under Thailand’s “lèse-majesté” law could conclude – with a prison sentence of up to 15 years on the line. 

In an amicus brief with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP, #TrialWatch urged the court to: 
• Distinguish institutional criticism from personal attacks 
• Require the prosecution to specify the precise nature threat her speech poses to public order 
• Uphold Thailand’s obligations under international law 

TrialWatch has monitored several cases under Section 112, including that of co-defendant Arnon Nampa. These prosecutions silence dissent and threaten core freedoms. 

We call on the court to protect the right to free expression and deliver a fair trial.
