A new report from CFJ’s #TrialWatch, chreaa_malawi, and uschumanrightsclinic reveals that nearly half of the women imprisoned in #Malawi for violent offenses linked to gender-based violence said they acted in self-defense. 

Chisomo is one of them. After surviving a brutal attack, she was jailed for nearly a year—without a lawyer, without a trial. 

Her case is not an anomaly—it reflects a wider crisis. Malawi’s justice system needs to address trauma and context when prosecuting survivors.
