India’s local journalists — often reporting with fewer protections, fewer resources, and less national attention — faced arrest far more often than their counterparts in big cities. 

CFJ's #TrialWatch, with nludofficial and Columbia Law School’s Human Rights Institute, analyzed hundreds of criminal cases against journalists across states in #India and found: 
🏘️ Journalists in small cities and local outlets were arrested in 58% of the time 
🏙️ Journalists in major cities → 24%
